Motorola Milestone 2 blurry pictures problem

The Motorola Milestone 2 Camera is a deception. It is announced as a 5 Mega pixel flash and autofocus one, but the photo quality is far from being acceptable.

Besides the strange cycle bug, that is, every 45 days the autofocus software would go crazy and you will get blurry photos for 45 days. Then when the 45 days are over the good period begins and you will get 45 days of good shots.

Most people who reported this problem had their smartphone replaced! There is no clear solution for this photo blur problem.
After sometime the images are completely out of focus all the time.

Image taken from the Motorola Support forum

Shoud I buy the Motorola Milestone 2 with this blurry pictures problem?

Happily, I was able to detect this before buying my Motorola :) I've changed my mind to the Motorola Milestone XT720.
Too bad for the Motorola Milestone 2, because the keyboard feature is very atractive.
I'm not saying that all handsets come with this bug, but it could be yours if you'd buy one!

Buy some other smartphone

Some tried a hard reset, firmware update, cleaning lenses with a kind of expensive cloth, but nothing solves this Motorola Milestone 2 blurry pictures problem.
Many are expecting some kind of miraculous upgrade from Motorola that will patch and solve this, but many people who bought it abroad or used just lost their money.
Just stay away from the Motorola Milestone 2 and its camera blur problem, I wanted to get back to Android but this is not the handset for it.

Samsung Galaxy Note review

Want a bigger screen?
Want to use your finger and an smart pen too?
Want to make phone calls?

Samsung Galaxy Note review

The fantastic Samsung Galaxy Note proposes a super 5.3" screen with a 1200 x 800 resolution HD Amoled.
The design reminds me of the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and it is extremely thin (9.6 mm) and light (178 grs)

Samsung has implemented a new technology called S Pen that will allow to write or design on your smartphone screen.
The 8 mega pixel camera can record HD videos, there is a smaller camera on the front for video conferences.
The battery (2500 amp) boost the smartphone autonomy, with a 1.4GHz Dual Core Processor and everything is put together under Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

I think that the most amazing feature is the splendid screen, where you can read, write and design in colors.
You can also play and watch films or course, but you can give it a proffessional use too, taking notes while in a meeting or drawing graphics.
The smart pen is integrated in the case so it is always handy.

The extras for this Samsung Galaxy Note review are:

The new concept in the smartphone world: it is not a tablet and it is not an exclusively touch screen phone, it is both! And it gives to it a more professional approach.

Read all the specifications: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote/note/spec.html?type=find
There are may added values like GPS, barometer and digital compass.

And you can upgrade the memory with a microSD card (up to 32GB)

Very good job!

The first mobile phone was invented in 1973

First mobile phone invented
The first mobile phone was invented in 1973
By the American researcher, Martin Cooper, now 83 years old. "The very first mobile phone weighed over a kilo and the battery charge did not exceed 20 minutes, which was also really good because you could not hold this thing for a long time, "recalled yesterday the former researcher at Motorola.

"We made a revolution with this phone. Before, we called somewhere and today call somebody, "he further said at the 31st International Conference of data protection and privacy. The phones today are too complex with too many applications and gadgets, he said.

"Every time we create a universal tool doing all sorts of different things, it doesn't perform one single thing neatly," said the experienced researcher. He also said that the future would be made of "a number of specialized tools that focus on one single thing to improve our lives."

In recent years, the modern tool of remote communication has experienced different stages of improvement and now provides several options like using it to search for data on the Internet and specialists promise more "improvements" yet.

Install Xampp on Ubuntu

How to easily install Xampp on Ubuntu
Remember Xampp is a Lamp (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environement ideal for developement, not suitable for production sites for security reasons. But it comes really handy to start developping right from start.
This install Xampp on Ubuntu comes with all the packages you need

1. DOWNLOAD

First go to the oficial donwload page:

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html

I've downloaded the latest version Xampp Linux 1.7.7:

http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-linux-1.7.7.tar.gz

This file is downloaded in my Desktop folder, do not extract the file, leave just the way it is.

2. INSTALL

Now you need to log in as the system administrator root, open the console and type:

cd Desktop

sudo -s

Extract the downloaded file to /opt

tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.7.7.tar.gz -C /opt

That's it, XAMPP is now installed in the /opt/lampp directory.

3 .Solve the httdocs permission problem

When you try to copy and paste your files to the httdocs directory you get a permission error, sol ve it with:

sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs/

4. Lunch Xampp

Now launch xampp with:

/opt/lampp/lampp start

check that everything works, open your browser and type:

http://localhost
Ah, it works!

5. Add your web sites to Xampp

Now to add your web sites go to :

mkdir /opt/lampp/htdocs/my-web-site-1
mkdir /opt/lampp/htdocs/my-web-site-2
mkdir /opt/lampp/htdocs/my-web-site-3

Before copying your files, run again:
sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs/

Now you can copy your own files there, then you can navigate to them by typing in your browser:
http://localhost/my-web-site-1
...
etc

To see database browse to:
http://localhost/phpmyadmin

To stop Xampp:
/opt/lampp/lampp stop

If you want to uninstall Xampp on Ubuntu
To uninstall XAMPP just type in this command:

rm -rf /opt/lampp

do you?

Download videos from Youtube with Ubuntu

To download Youtube videos with Ubuntu you need to install youtube-dl. It is a program that works on the command line to download videos from Youtube.

This will download public videos from Youtube, to donwload protected videos you can change the parameters on the command line to youtube-dl -u myuser -p mypassword, your Youtube access data.
So, to donwload Youtube public videos with Ubuntu.
Open the console and type:

sudo apt-get youtube-dl
sudo youtube-dl --update
sudo youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74EuLHyppow

Change the youtube url to the video you want to donwload
This will donwload the video 74EuLyppow.mp4 to your computer

The command update is very important as you will get the latest version of this program with the latest fix.
It works perfectly for me :)

Drupal adsense in content

This tip will show you how to insert your ads in the middle of your content with Drupal 6. Drupal 6 has many modules with lots of functions to do things, but if you can get to do things without installing a new module is much better!
So, if you want to insert adsense or any other javascript based ads in the middle of you content, in between your paragraphs, you can do it with a little bit of php.

1. Open your active theme folder, usually in /sites/all/themes/my_active_theme

2. Open the file page.tlp.php please do a backup of this file first

3. Search the line:   <?php print $content ?> and insert this code right before

<?php
// Show ads when user is not logged in
if(!user_is_logged_in())
{
// Show ads in the middle of content
$adsBlock='<script type="text/javascript">PLACE YOUR JAVASCRIPT CODE HERE</script>';
$arr = explode ("</p>", $content); // center content ads insert ads after first paragraph
$arr[1] = $adsBlock . $arr[1];
$content = implode("</p>", $arr);
}
?>
This will show ads in the middle of your content right after the first paragraph, if you want to show your ads after the secod paragraph change this line
$arr[1] = $adsBlock . $arr[1];
to
$arr[2] = $adsBlock . $arr[2];

This code insert your ads after the first or second paragraph so it will appear in the middle of your article.
The ads will show once even if it is on the teaser view, it will only appear in the first post, so you won't have too many ads appearing.
And finally to make it work, clear the site cache to see changes. Now your ads appear in the middle of  content
All this is simply done without installing another Drupal module you only have to copy the code and adapt it a little bit to your needs.
In fact Drupal adsense module does not inject the ads in the middle of content but before or after the content, so here you've got a very easy way to do it, it works like a charm!

Configure Xampp on Windows

As you already know Xampp is a prepared environment to develop web applications with Apache, PHP and MySQL.
The good thing is that you don't have to spend time to install and configure these separately.
Once you've installed it  you may have to configure Xampp on windows to adapt it to your needs though, so here you can see some tips and tricks to tune up your Xampp installation on Windows

Launch PHP on the command line

Add C:\xampp\php\ to your environment variable windows PATH
Append your XAMPP PHP directory at the back of what is already there ;C:\xampp\php\

Increase PHP memory limit

Edit php.ini in c:/xampp/php/php.ini

change memory_limit to whatever you want:

memory_limit=256M

Add your web sites

Go to the Httdocs folder create a folder named old, cut and paste all loose files (not directories)
Then copy or create your own website folders:

/httdocs/website_1
/httdocs/website_2
/httdocs/website_3

You will access to them like this:

http://localhost/website_1

Xampp on windows: use MySQL on the command line

cd c:\xampp\mysql\bin

Set the root password:
mysqladmin.exe -u root password yourpassword

Connect to mysql:

mysql.exe --user=root --password=yourpassword

Load SQL file:

source c:/db/my_database.sql;

If all this fails reset root password to empty by executing: c:/xampp/mysql/resetroot.bat

Add a Virtual Host configuration

c:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf

For a personalized configuration:

Add or edit files in:
c:\xampp\apache\conf\extra

So there, you can configure Xampp to work on windows and then deploy your pages and make it work on a Linux machine!

Ubuntu 10: window buttons to the right

One more thing with Ubuntu 10: windows buttons are on the left instead of the right trying to imitate the Apple style.
I prefer the buttons to the right for a simple reason: the window title is the first thing you see to the left and the whole window top space is so much better optimized. I really hope they revert this: hey people from Canonical do not micmick Apple stuff, please, keep on thinking about users as before!

 I had to do some search to find how to change this one and here is the trick:

> Press ALT+F2 button to launch the Run application window
> Type gconf-editor

Navigate to Apps -> Metacity -> General
Double click on button_layout, values are: close,minimize,maximize:
Change values to menu:close,minimize,maximize
Well, I did mine to menu:minimize,maximize,close

To get the close control all to the right
That makes it easy if use both Windows and Linux regurlaly

Back to Ubuntu 10

Last night a virus killed my Windows XP, katusha a form or worm attacked my laptop.
I decided to get back to Ubuntu as fighting against viruses, reformating my laptop every six month and reinstalling the OS and all the software can be annoying!

And now wich Ubuntu version to choose? I prefer a LTS (Long Term Support) version of course. The 10.04 LTS version "The Lucid Lynx" is supported till April 2013. For all the other new versions a 6 months update is due.
I've tried Ubuntu 11.04 but it slowed down my laptop too much so I went back to Ubuntu 10.

But there are so many thing I still love about Windows (omg!, ha!) I really love the Arial font type as it is my favourite for internet browsing. Times New Roman and Courier New are still the best! In fact Courier New is my favourite for programming.

So, to install the Microsoft font package in Ubuntu just type:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Anwser yes to all the license questions.

I've opened Firefox and the font type was the old "Sans", where is Arial in Firefox browser?
Open Firefox and go to:
Edit > Preferences > Content and choose Arial as the default font.

And in your system go to:

System > Preferences > Appearance and select Arial for the groups you want

The second thing I need is support for the spanish language, so to install the spanish language support just type:

sudo apt-get install language-support-es

That's pretty much all about it, the next step is configuring my programming environement.

Nokia update Symbian Belle

Nokia annouces a Symbian major update "Belle" and launches 3 new smartphones models, the Nokia 600, 700 and 701.

Before the  complete migration of all its mobile devices to Windows Phone 7,  Nokia redouble its efforts to achieve its goal of  commercializing over 150  million Symbian devices by 2015.

After the update Anna's mobile operating system introduced recently and the launch of the new models of Symbian smartphones, the Finnish manufacturer has unveiled a new version of its OS house.

Called "Symbian Belle", (a nice name, though)  the update of the mobile platform is a major one. It provides a more streamlined interface, inspired by Android, which offers up to six customizable home screens, with new widgets, and better a management.

Belle also extends the use of wireless technology NFC (Near Field Communications) introduced by Anna, and can use it to share pictures, videos, contacts with other NFC devices compatible.

I think it is a great effort from Nokia and that they are on the right way, what else could they do?
The new OS interface is really cute, as you can see on the video it is like a mixture of Android and Apple looking.
Now, the great next step would be to boost their developpers world.

Nokia resurrection?

I am a Nokia fan, to me they are the best telephones in the world, but for the last 3 years I think they've missed something in the way to the smartphones market.
Stubbornly leaning on the Symbian OS didn't do good to their sales and production affairs.
The Executive Director of Finland's Nokia, the world's number one of mobile phones, announced the release of its new smartphone with Windows 7 Phone for the end of 2011 with mass production in 2012.

"We are increasingly confident that our first Windows 7 Phone model will be comming out before the end of the year, with mass production in 2012," said Stephen Elop, who was speaking at the show CommunicAsia Singapore , where Nokia is back after 10 year of absence.

Nevertheless the online Nokia store have been closed in Spain and France from may 2011, will they reopened them for the new Nokia?

On the other hand for the last month of June Ovi Store hits over 6 million download per day corresponding to Symbian phones software, how can one read such contradictory figures?

Image source: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/13043_Ovi_Store_hits_6_million_downl.php

I think they are on their way to find their way, will Windows 7 be their way?
Let's wait and see

Making Wordpress work without htaccess

To make work Wordpress pretty permalinks structure you need htaccess on your site. htaccess is a file that is at the root of your web site to make the Apache rewrite mode work with structured url.
The default "ugly" Wordpress url looks like this:

http://mysite.com/?p=SOME_NUMBER
To change this url structure to a prettiest one like this:

http://mysite.com/year/month/post-name/
You need htaccess enabled, but sometimes your webhosting doesn't allow htaccess, so here is the fixing for it:
Connect to the wordpress-admin dashboard and go to Settings > Permalinks
Choose the custom structure option and fill the field with these values:

/index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

The trick here is adding the /index.php/ before the other parameters and that is telling the path info to take the index document (index.php) into consideration, this will make work Wordpress without htaccess.
Well, this this is an "almost" pretty solution to make work Wordpress without htaccess as you will always have the index.php in between your url path.
In fact if you are working in a serious site that is important to you it is better to consider a good webhosting with everything in it.
And you can always use blogger that has everything on it for free! lol

Is social networking good for SEO?

Yes indeed, social networking is good for increasing your visits, but do not rely only on it. Using Facebook, Twitter and other social networks can increase your visits, but only quality will retain your visitors.
And think of it: social networking is a trend we don't really know how log will be high and on.
To keep social networking high you need to mantain a regular activity in social networking sites, I mean, you need to invest your time on it, be an active member, be connected twitting, clicking on I like buttons, posting messages on the wall ad so on, I would say: take social networking as a second activity, your primary one should be producing quality sites and SEO optimized sites most of all, this can take you to firsts search positions without all the social stuff.

People are still using forums, posting on forums and you can always post on forums and have your web site in the signature, but how long can last a Facebook page?
I've heard of some people complaining of having their Facebook pages suddenly closed.
So, social networking is good to increase your visits, but social networking for SEO is somethig else, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the result of good web pages, inline optimization, getting valuable natural backlinks and mostly good content that will be indexed by robots and social networking have nothing to do with it.
Keep on doing your good job and create sites that will interest people, the rest will come naturally on.

Future Cell Phone Technology

I was just thinking, where would be the next step of a future cell phone technology?
Because nowdays the cell phone technology is too marketing oriented. One of the reasons why I've decided to never get an Iphone it is because the first thing you've to do with it is to insert your credit card data!
Well, not everything is in credit card and touch screen, Steven Jobs is too confident, he wants to monopolize the cell phone world!

But, what would it make a real future cell phone technology, a real revolution?
What would you spect from a phone, what new features that you don't have today?
Wouldn't you like to have an holographic projection of your loved ones, for example?
Let's say you would like to talk to your dear one, if you could see her in an 3D holographic proyection wouldn't it be that nice?

Picture courtesy from: http://petitinvention.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/cobalto-zafiro/

We want original features now, everybody likes Wifi, 3G, high speed surfing, and all but it is not new, you know, things like facebook are trends and they will pass away.

Can you imagine a 3D holographic proyection from your mobile phone in your product presentation?
Can you imagine being far away and seeing and talking to your children through an 3D proyection?
Why they don't develop holographic proyection for the future cell phone technology? It is already invented.

Which other feature would you like?
Maybe full command voice operated cell phones?
Direct translation feature? For example, let's say you speak french, the direct translation feature will say a direct translation of your words in english;
Too much for future cell phone technology?

What do you think?

Nokia X3 review

The Nokia X3 is S40 based and it is one of the first telephones with dual management: the keyboard and the touch screen. It is a fairly cheap phone with fantastic music player features.
In this picture you can see the Nokia X3-02, candy bar and there is the slide version of the model also.
So it may be a good idea to buy it if you are planning to pass to a touch screen while having a physical keyboard to write messages.
I was talking to someone and I activated the loud speakers with my chin (it seems that I smile a lot while I talk) so I would say that the touch screen is quite sensitive.
There is a key dedicated to music and volumes keys too.
The earphone sounds has a very good quality while in conversation and the antenna reception is excelent as with all Nokia phones.

The look is really slick and elegant a very fine mobile phone, the dimensions are 10,6 x 4,8 x 1 cm and it is very light 94 grams only.
So it is a good companion to keep in your pocket to get around everywhere.
Some say that the Nokia X3 it is not really a smartphone, as it is just a Symbian S40 OS. In fact ther is no complexity in it as you can see in the menu options.

The wifi connection is really performant and I could surf the web quite fast. And there is Twitter, Facebook and Youtube as preinstalled applications, so these feature are really atractive.

The negative:
Well, in this Nokia X3 review I will talk about some inconviences I've found:
  • There is no key dedicated to the camera and to take a picture you have to tap on the camera icon in the screen which in a sunny day is kind of hard to see.
  • There is no flash led incorporated.
  • No autofocus, so you better stand still while taking a picture
  • The keypad *,0,# are located to the right instead of at the bottom so you will need two days to adapt to it
  • The video quality is very poor
 I will recomend this phone to you if you want to start with a touch screen and you don't care about photo and video quality which is very far away from the N85 or the 6720 models.
The price is very atractive only 140 euros

    Wordpress Sitemap without plugin

    For all of you who've got a Wordpress blog, and if you ever wondered if you could have a site map of all of your posts without plugin.

    This is a handy script that does it.
    I prefer not to install plugins if I can manage things in a lighter way, so I'm less updates dependent. Because the thing about using Wordpress is that you should update the Wordpress core and plugins every now and then (too often, to me)

    This morning I've tested it on my Wordpress web site, and it works like a charm, here is how to do it:

    • Open your template folder
    • Open the page.php and save it as sitemap.php
    • Replace the Replace <?php the_content(); ?> line with the code you see down here:

    Copy this code inside the sitemap.php file, replace the <?php the_content(); ?> withthe following code snippet:

    <h3>Pages</h3>
    <ul><?php wp_list_pages("title_li=" ); ?></ul>
    <h3>Feeds</h3>
    <ul>
    <li><a title="Full content" href="feed:<?php bloginfo('rss2_url'); ?>">Main RSS</a></li>
    <li><a title="Comment Feed" href="feed:<?php bloginfo('comments_rss2_url'); ?>">Comment Feed</a></li>
    </ul>
    <h3>Categories</h3>
    <ul><?php wp_list_cats('sort_column=name&optioncount=1&hierarchical=0&feed=RSS'); ?></ul>
    <h3>All Blog Posts:</h3>
    <ul><?php $archive_query = new WP_Query('showposts=1000&cat=-8');
    while ($archive_query->have_posts()) : $archive_query->the_post(); ?>
    <li>
    <a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a>
    (<?php comments_number('0', '1', '%'); ?>)
    </li>
    <?php endwhile; ?>
    </ul>
    <h3>Archives</h3>
    <ul><?php wp_get_archives('type=monthly&show_post_count=true'); ?></ul>

    • In Wp-admin dashboard add a new page named: sitemap
    • In the Page Attributes box, choose sitemap  template and then publish this page. That's it!

    This accesory is not optimized for this iPhone

    Are you getting the message: This accesory is not optimized for this iPhone?
    Well, this message pops up every now and then and the iPhone was over heating some times.
    I'm happy because I repaired two phones today! My Sony Ericsson too!

    Well, the iPhone thinks it is plugged into a device and you may have sound and battery problems too so the auto protect mechanism stops the normal use of the phone.

    The problem is all the dust, dirt and crap at the bottom connector. I've just cleaned the iPhone connector carefully.

    Here is the SIMPLE solution:

    1. Turn off the iPhone
    2. Spray some cold air to the bottom connector
    3. Take a toothbrush and put one drop of contact cleaner on it
    4. Brush out the dirt carefully
    5. Spray some cold air again
    6. Turn it on

    It works perfectly!

    Replace Lcd Sony Ericsson c510

    I've got my new Lcd for the Sony Ericsson C510, here you can see how to dissasemble it and replace it, step by step:

    1. Unscrew the back

    2. Take off the thin blue layer around the camera
    3. The back of the phone is disassembled

    4. Now the front side, see? put your finger in the memory card hole it is easy

    5. Take out the keyboard pad

    6. Remove the LCD screen: CAREFUL!

    7. This is at the back of the LCD screen, unplug everything carefully

    8. The Sony Ericsson C510 is fully disassembled now: ready to replace the screen

    9. Assemble everything back, make sure that everything is firmly pluged back in place

    It works: my Sony Ericsson is brand new now!

    Nokia 2710 review

    I've just got my new Nokia 2710 navigation edition, here's the look of it:

    It is a fair nice phone for for a very low price.

    And it is got integrated GPS that works quite well.
    The GPS maps can be updated for free and the GPS feature is free for life! You just got to sign in for an OVI account and install the sotfware, you can install maps for almost every country in the world.

    The screen is very clear and sharp.
    It has a 2M camera for photos and videos.
    The memory can be extended through a Micro SD card.
    I've upgraded to a faster Micro SD card and the GPS maps load quite fast!
    In general when you upgrade the Micro SD card if you get a good fast one, everything in the phone will work faster too!
    Photo and video quality are acceptable, but not the greatest, and one of the greatest things for me is the standard 3.5mm jack, so you can directly plug in your favourite stereo headsets, and the standard micro USB to connect it to your PC.
    The battery stands for days.. this feature alogn with the worldwide GPS makes the Nokia 2710 a fantastic phone for travellers!

    I've just found a little problem: the speaker volume is very low. This can be a real drawback, if someone calls you and you're on a loud street you wont hear anything.
    I've just solved the low volume problem with the Equalizator program by settings the sound more high pitched, and also by activating the extended stereo feature.
    When setting the Equalizer it works very well by setting all the high and low pitched sound values to their maximum the equalizer parameters should look like a V, and so the speaker volume is really increased.

    htaccess SEO

    I'm going to show you some good htaccess SEO tricks in this post.
    If you really want to get some good Page Rank then all the crawl errors that you see in te Google Webmaster Tools should be corrected.
    Most of these errors are 404 (Not found) errors, meaning that there are link to pages in your site that doesn't exist anymore, maybe because the url changed or they were deleted.

    With these htaccess SEO tricks you can easily correct some errors and improve SEO on your website

    1. # Eliminate the /folder-name from directory from url
        RedirectMatch 301 /folder-name/ http://www.my-site.com/

    2. # Rename the /old-name directory to new-name
        RewriteRule ^old-name/(.*)$ /new-name/$1 [R=301,L]

    3. Feedburner redirect
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !FeedBurner.*
      RewriteRule ^rss.xml$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/MySite [R=temp,L]

    4. Setting preferred domain with starting with www
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^
      mydomain\.com$ [NC]
      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.
      mydomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

    5. Redirect to new domain
      RewriteCond
      %{HTTP_HOST} ^([^.:]+\.)*oldwebsite\.com\.?(:[0-9]*)?$ [NC]
      RewriteRule
      ^/(.*)$ http://www.mynewwebsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

    6. Redirect one single page (with no extension):
      RewriteRule ^my-old-page$ http://www.mysite.com/my-new-page [R=301,L]
    7. Url rewriting: Rewriting yoursite.com/article.php?article_id=abc to yoursite.com/abc
      RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)$ article.php?n=$1
      RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+)/$ article.php?n=$1

    Google Analytics stats for pdf download

    Did you ever wondered how to track the number of times a pdf file is downloaded from your web site using Google Analytics?

    This javasript code snippet will do it for you.

    This javascript code snippet will allow you to follow up the number of downloads for a pdf file.
    It is JQuery based, so you must have the JQuery library included to call up this function.
    The function is triggered each time some one clicks on your link to donwload the pdf file.

    How to do it

    1. In your link tag insert the class="pdf" attribute
    <a href="http://www.blogger.com/download/file.pdf" class="pdf">

    2. Copy/Paste this function in your HTML or javascript source code file

    $(function(){
    $('a.pdf').click(function(){
    // alert("Yu've clicked on a pdf file");
    var documentName = $(this).attr("href");
    _gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Download','PDF',documentName]);
    });

    3. It will track on the event 'Download' automatically.

    The class="pdf" attribute in the href tag is very important as it makes the function work

    That's it!

    Add Google Analytics code to Blogger templates

    It is a very good idea to have detailed stats from your site visits, you probably know Google Analytics, you can track visitors by country and many more criteria it is a fantastic stats tool.

    With Blogger you don't need to do any site verification to insert the Google Analytics code, you just need to be connected with your gmail credentials

    With the old blogger template:

    1. Grab your analytics code (copy)
    2. On Blogger click on the Layout tab and choose HTML
    3. Copy the Analitics code before the ending body tag

    With the new blogger templates (blogger in draft)

    1. Copy the Analytics tracking code
    2. On Blogger, go to the Layouts > Page Elements tab and click one of the "Add a Gadget" links
    3. Choose "HTML / JavaScript"
    4. Paste the Analytics tracking code into the text area
    5. Save (window will close)
    6. On Layouts > Page Elements, drag the new HTML / JavaScript gadget into your blog's footer. You'll want it to be the last gadget on the page.

    That's it

    Solving DSL problems

    It has been a nightmare all these last months with Free ADSL connection problems.
    After 4 visits from their technicians they change the Freebox V5 and one week later the problems were still there!
    I've tried the ferrite bead trick, it helped to get a little bit more signal, the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) indicator went up 100 only (I was at 3000/4000 k when the usual is 9000/1000 k/seconds) and no TV, internet, telephone.

    But yesterday I decided to by a new ADSL filter and a new RJ11 cable. The ADSL filter is a Belkin one and the cable is a 10 meters cable of good quality, I had a 15 meters cable of lower quality.
    I plugged everything and BOOM! The ATM indicator went up to 9700 k/s for the first time!

    Create a Facebook Fan page

    Well, to create a Facebook Fan page, you must go to: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

    I just did it for my web site, as I'm not so Facebook fan myself, lol but I think is it worth it to do some social networking, promoting and so on.
    I haven't been able to create a profile yet as the phone number validation doesn't work in Facebook now!

    301 Redirecting and keeping your Page Rank

    If you've changed your domain name but you would like to keep your Page Rank?
    You should do a 301 redirect, meaning that your page has been moved.

    The best way to do this it is through the .htaccess file but some times you would not have access to this file, specially in free hosted sites.

    So you can use a simple PHP snipet code, just copy and paste this

    <?
    Header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
    Header( "Location: http://www.my-new-domain.com" );
    ?>

    First thing in your php page and for each page that you want to redirect.

    This way you will be redirecting pages to your new domain and keep your well deserved Page Rank

    Starting from Zero

    I've set up for my new web site at the beginning of january.

    Debranding Sony Ericsson c510

    How to debrand the phone Sony Ericsson c510. I didn't like the Vodafone customisation, so after several tests and trials I've found the best way to do it.

    You will need these files:

    • The main and fs files
    • A custom pack, that you should NOT unzip. The custom pack has important data from your country phone providers

    The tool a2uploader (See image here:).

    I've used the R1FA035 files version for the c510, not the latest which have RECEPTION problems.

    So basically you will:

    1. First flash the Main and FS files
    2. Then update customs files with a2uploader (In ZIP format)

    In detail:

    1.Open the main and add fs files with a2uploader. Click on flash.

    2.Your phone is turned OFF. Hold on "C" and plug it, the flashing process will start...

    (IMPORTANT: your battery should be fully charged)

    3.When it is done, unplug the phone, take the battery out and reinsert it

    4. Now lets customize the phone, or finalize it.

    5. Press on fileSystem and navigate in your phone to tpa > preset> custom and there upload your custom

    pack in zip format.

    6. Once it is uploaded, press the Shutdown button. Disconnect, take out the battery, reinsert it and turn
    your phone on.

    NOTE: you must get the firmware(FS + MAIN) and Custom from either 4shared, topsony, topse.ru, etc.

    Make Your Blogger Blog DoFollow

    Before doing these steps, you should allow anonymous comments by going to Settings in Blogger and then Comments. You may enable or disable the moderation. You will soon know the importance of moderation, however. Here are the steps to make comments DoFollow:

    Go to Blogger layout (in new Blogger) and click Edit HTML (Check EXPAND WIDGET TEMPLATE checkbox)

    Search for rel='nofollow' You will find at least two of them in the code.

    Replace rel='nofollow' with an empty string

    The second nofollow attribute is for pingback/trackback URLs (blogs that link to your post and ping it). You may or may not retain these URLs. It’s completely optional.

    Chitika ads slowing my site

    I had to remove the Chitika ads from my site as it was causing loading problems.

    I found the cute mini malls original and their idea very interesting: focusing on search engines results only.

    But what about your usual visitors? they get you lots of money too, but if I come to think between users and money, I prefer speed up my site to make easy for the users to come and read, money will come, anyway

    Disassembling Sony Ericsson C510

    I had to dissasemble my Sony Ericsson C510. There was a reception problem and I couldn't get any call, it was like the network was gone.
    In fact, there was no network signal at all. Here you can see all the different pieces:

    I've sprayed it with contact cleaner and once I've assembled everything, it works perfectly! The problem was that the little cable down to the antenna (the smal piece you can see on the bottom left corner) was unplugged, so all I had to do was to plug it back on!

    The reception has boosted and I get a strong signal even when I am in a elevator!

    Well contact cleaner went through too much, even here:

    Beside the lcd screen, and now there are some marks on the screen, the cell phone works perfectly though!

    So if you are going to use the contact cleaner spray, spray only a little bit and be careful and only spray where needed, those parts that cannot be damaged, like circuits, but mostly do not spray the LCD screen!

    After all the electronic contact cleaner is a powerfull chimical product.
    My C510 keeps on working anyway ;-)

    There you are!

    Resurrect laptop battery

    • First of all I would like to thank people who post interesting and helpfull things on the Internet, thanks to the post from someone in Australia I was able to save and resurrect my laptop battery.

      Here are the principles:

      We take an overcharged capacitor as being the problem and set to finding a solution.
      We need to use power plugs with three inputs - neg, pos and earth.
      There must be a switch to this individual power plug so we can turn it on/off. (If there is no switch in the power plug use one of those plug extension with a switch on it).

      How to do it:
      1. Plug the laptop with the battery (Power ON)
      2. Take out the battery (Power is still ON)
      3. Switch the power of the plug off, the plug is plugged but the power if OFF.

      The idea is that the capacitor can bleed through the earth wire.
      That's all, battery resurrected!
